Warhol

4-Square
This is a picture that i took of my sister. Took make this shot I had to individually adjust each image. I worked out the threshold of each and I wanted the colors to flow well together. After I took each image onto a new blank document and alligned them with one another.
This is a close up view of my sister and in the reflection of her glasses you can see me taking the photo. For this image I first adjusted the threshold of the image to magnify the shadows of the shot. Next I adjusted the hue and saturation to get the purple in those dark spaces. Then I had to select the white in the image individualy and select the background color to it to come up with this image.

This image is of a pair of my shoes. With this image I first adjusted the threshold of the image and then changed the hue and saturation of the image to make the dark parts red. After this i seleted each of the squares and adjusted the background of the shot.

5 Photoshop pictures

This image was focused on color emphasis. I had to make several layers for this image and isolate the airplane from the rest of the image so that it would stand out. Once i cut it from the image I intensified the colors so that against the black and white backdrop it would stand out. I then selectedd the rest of the image so that the backdrop would appear and i saved it as a jpeg so the image would compress together.

In this picture I edited the colors of the birds by adjusting the thresholds. To make this image took longer then most in adjusting the colors because there were three different types therefore I had to create many individual layers for each bird in the shot. I feel that the green bird shows the best effects of this type of editing in showing the light and dark parrts of the image. Getting the whole image with the magnetic lasoo ws the hardest part for me in this and I always had to do it several times before it worked correctly. This was one of my favorite types of editing.

This picture shows the effects of mirroring the image. With this i had to adjust the bottom image so it would flow nicely with the image. This was one of the harder editing jobs we had to do and I found it difficult to get the alignment correctly in place for the image.

For this image I cut and pasted the tree onto the background with the to columbs to combine two completely different images. For this i had to outline the tree and delete the rest of the image and paste it to the other image. Aligning it was the most challenging part.

For this image I blended the window with the enhanced image of the resevior. I had to make dublicate layers so that i wouldn't loose my original image. I chose the type of layer blend and then I adjusted the intensirty of it so that you could still see the original background.

Photoshop

The process of Photoshop I found to be very precise and challenging, however it was entertaining to develop and apply the many different aspects of it to my image. We learned various techniques to enhance light and texture within out images. This could help them to stand out even more amongst there backdrops. The image I used for this assignment was of my “Little Toy” project. The picture is of a gnome, which was the center of my project, placed on a conveyer belt at an airport where the luggage comes out. The original image is far different from my edited shot which was the main purpose of this assignment, to use an image and create something totally different from it.
The first step I took in making this image was adjusting the threshold of the gnome individually. I made the gnome a light blue color to do this I had to cut the gnome from the background so that the finishing product would be separate from the background. Next I had to create at least ten different layers and with each one I had to change the threshold making the first as light as possible and the last as dark as possible. With that I took each individual layer and made the one with the lightest threshold the darkest shade of blue and the last layer of threshold that was the darkest the lightest shade of blue. This creates nice shading within the image of the portions that are supposed to be lighter then the rest to grasp and identify what it is. The result of this made the object entirely blue, which was what I was going for in editing this image.
After this part of the process was finished I changed the background using the poster edges filter, which gave it its gritty paintbrush feel. Then cut the image and spherized the image, which gave it the fisheye affect. This makes the picture bulge out as if your viewing it through a looking glass. The process all though difficult gave the results that I was looking for in my image. I never realized how much you can truly manipulate an image. This however does not take away from the truth that I have learned about taking photography in that your best image is the one you see through your own eyes and that is without manipulations.

Blended Image

The background shot was a window at mercy and the wave of color is my photo of landscape where the colors are intensified.

Little Toy

This was taken on the way to Las Vegas within the airplane.

This picture was also taken on the airplane before getting out, the gnome is placed in the luggage compartment.

This shot was taken at the baggage claim at the Las Vegas airport. I was given many looks becuase of this image.

This image was one of my favorite shots for my Little Toy project. This was taken on an escalator on the strip.

This shot was taken on the strip. I had to give the Frankeinstein 50 cents for this picture.

This was taken at a movie thearte in Las Vegas. I thought it related pretty well to my subject.

This was taken in the movie theatre in Las Vegas. The gnome was bonding with my teammates. :]

Timothy H. O'Sullivan

Born in the year 1840 in New York City
Death: January 14th 1882 at the age of 41 of tuberculosis
Best Known For: Civil Wr photos and landscape images of the American West

Began career as an apprentice to Matthew Brady and worked in his Washington studio under Alexander Garner

Before the Civil War many soldiers wanted their pictures taken in their uniforms and O'Sullivan was one of the first to take portrait shots

When war began he went off on his own to capture images of the American Civil War

Where he took one of his most famous pictures the, "Harvest of Death"

"Harvest of Death" (1863) Confederate dead at Gettysburg
- He strayed away from the traditional images of the war of soldiers primarily at rest and in good spirits, to the more real and horrid scenes of war

- Decided to leave Brady over the issue of not getting proper credit for his work, like the image above

- Went on to creating his own photographic business and traveled around the United States taking photographic surveys

- From 1867 to 1869 focused on landscape images working for Larence King’s United States Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel
- And then went on an expedition of the Panama and was a lead photographer for them in 1871, 1873, and 1874
- When he returned he was made the first photographer of the United States Geological Survey

- With high recommendations from Brady, King and Gardner O'Sullivan was appointed chief photographer of the Department of Treasury in 1880 but left the position in only a few months for his poor health

This photograph taken by O'Sullivan creates nice depth of field
and use of lighting to make the image appear as it does. The
framing of the image draws the eye from the rick in the front to the
mountain range in the back. Nice rule of thirds. The way the
mountain appears darker against the clouds really gives it a even view.

One of Timothy O'Sullivans most famous shots called
"Dead Boy at Fredricksburg" (December 1862)

Ch. 9 Landscape

-focus on the natural world without the presence of humans
- tends to be more formal

ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY

DETAIL PHOTOGRAPHY

THE GRAND LANDSCAPE
Landmarks in Landscape
Carleton E. Watkins- photographed the grandeur American West as well as Yosemite Valley/ made gallery in San Francisco > photos one of the first to be made into art
Ansel Adams- took shots of Yosemite Valley > the way of seeing the natural world was forever changed> helped in the preserving of it
Photographing the Landscape
Thinking Artistically
- Composition and Viewpoint > critical / positioning of the camera and angle of the shot
- Value= the lighting of the image and the different tones it brings to the Image
Ex: wide range makes dramatic/ narrow range makes more contemplated
Try creating a balance between UNITY and VARIETY> creates an image that is not chaotic
Camera Settings
> maximum depth of field
   - use small f/stops
   - creating longer shutter speeds
   - tripod useful for sharp crisp images
Light

Sunrise

Sunset
  > just after sunrise and just after sunset
  - direct lighting easier for distance shots then close up (for close up creates shadows and thats not good)
  - angle of the sun
Film
- 100 ISO with 35mm
with medium or large format camera
- black and white prefered, color can over power other elements of art
Lenses
- wide-angle lense that capture more of the scene
gives closer and farther images creating depth
- Macro lenses useful for close-up images
Filters
- yellow filters bring out clouds
- red filter- for deep black skies
Camera Support
- small f/stops slower shutter speed must use tripod
The Grand Landscape
- the "big view" for pictures of the great outdoors-- wide open expanses that showcase the majesty of the natural world
Ex: national, state or city parks
- always includes a large expanse of the scene, and wide- angle lenses will give you a wider view
traditional composition remember rule of thirds and positioning of subject
- yellow, orange, and red filter to make clouds stand out
Landscape Details and Close- ups

close- up
 - more inviting
- Fall and Spring seasons present colors
- cloudy and overcast conditions ideal to iliminate shadows
Abstracted Elements in the Landscape
- images composed of lines, shapes, values, and textures
- get really close and photograph a part of the whole
telephoto> for distance macro> for small subjects

Ch. 8 Blog Notes Pg. 179-197

Architecture and Urban Landscape
indirect portraits- buildings materials, styles and scale provide clues to who the people are that built them where and what their lives were like.
- lets us examine the formal aspects of design
-has a lot in common with landscape photography
Looking Back
architecture was popular b/c:
- moving pictures took to long
-buildings were stationary
-emphasis on creating EMOTION through use of lighting and shadows
Photographing the Built Environment
Thinking Artistically
- a visual recording of a building
- a casual "sketch" of a place and the emotions connected to it
-details of a building
Lines-=can be used to lead the viewers eye or cut the image into different sections of values or textures
pattern- the repetition of any of the elements or art
            - adds visual complexity
Camera Settings
smaller f-stop creates greater depth of field, bringing more of the scene into focus
use bigger camera format for the most detailed images
a slow ISO setting creates a finer image
VALUE AND TEXTURE
value most important in black and white photography
value helps determine the shapes of objects and the direction of the light source
contrast- the greater the difference in the tonal values, the more 3-dimensional the image will look. the more similar the values in a print are, the more 2-dimensional it looks
low-key print= has darker values
high-key print= made up of mostly lighter values
texture- the tactile or "touchable" quality of a surface
            - enhances the 3-dimensional quality of a photograph
Film
Color- emphasizes color, setting (commercial)
Black and White- emphasizes values, shapes and textures (artistic)

Lighting
important for interior architectural photography
incandescent-regular household bulbs (appears orange)
quartz- modern spotlights (appears yellow)
fluorescent- (appears greener)
daylight

Lenses
wide-angle lenses are preferable b/c in an enclosed space it can be difficult to get the whole image

Camera Support
tripods are best used in using a slow shutter speed b/c it creates a fine-grained film and lots of depth of field
preferably a light weight one

Filters
a polarizer can separate images and reduce shininess

The Big View
(commercial) wide-angle view, overall view
perspective distortion- appears as strong converging lines in a building, where the sides of the building angle toward each other instead of looking parallel as they are in reality
straight forwards shot creates a 2-dimensional image
a bit to the side will reveal better textures, forms, and shadows
Shadows
great way to tune into the visual world around us
The Detail Shot
features the detailed architectural elements of a buildings exterior or interior
want to use telephoto lenses so that you can stand at street level and zero in on intriguing elements
Interior Views
can create a presence of the of the people who live in and use a room
wide-angle lens for big view
the higher the f-stop the more depth of field you get
    - good for close range/ detail shots
tripod preferable b/c most likely will have slow shutter speed and aperture

American Photography

  • NY Daily News is the oldest tabloid newspaper in the United States
- based on pictures
- front page has to attract attention to the viewer to buy that newspaper
  • NY Graphic most extreme tabloud
